SENIOR MANAGEMENT
William Heiden, Chairman, CEO and President
William Heiden is an experienced pharmaceutical and biotechnology executive. He served most recently as president and CEO of Elixir Pharmaceuticals, and prior to that as President and COO of Praecis (acquired by GSK), which he had joined in May 2002. From 1987 to 2002, he progressed through various positions of increasing responsibility at Schering Plough (now Merck), including Managing Director of a number of businesses in the U.S., Europe and Canada. Mr. Heiden holds an MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, an MS degree from the University of Louvain and a Bachelors degree from the University of Florida. He serves on the Board of Directors of LFB Biotechnologies in Les Ulis, France, Conjuchem Biotechnologies, Inc. in Montreal, Canada (CJB.TO) and two private pharmaceutical companies.
Harry M. Meade, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Research and Development
Harry M. Meade joined GTC Biotherapeutics in 1994, and is a founding member of the company. Dr. Meade directs all transgenic molecular biology research and development efforts conducted within the company, including the evaluation of technologies having potential to increase the efficiencies of transgenic protein expression.
Dr. Meade has over 25 years of research experience, the last ten years' pertaining to transgenic research and the development of protein expression systems. He has held scientific positions with Genzyme Corporation, Biogen, and Merck. Dr. Meade also is a co-inventor on the first issued patent relating to the production of therapeutic proteins in the milk of animals.
Dr. Meade received his Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed his post-doctoral studies at Harvard University. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Electrical Engineering from Union College.
Richard A. Scotland, Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs
Richard Scotland joined GTC Biotherapeutics in 2002 and holds the position of Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs. Mr. Scotland is responsible for directing worldwide regulatory activities pertaining to the development of therapeutic proteins derived from the milk of transgenic animals.
Mr. Scotland has over 20 years of regulatory affairs experience with various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies including Serono Laboratories, Genzyme Corporation and Astra Pharmaceuticals.
Richard Scotland holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology from St. Joseph's College in North Windham, Maine.
Daniel S. Woloshen, Senior Vice President & General Counsel
Daniel S. Woloshen joined GTC Biotherapeutics in 1999. Mr. Woloshen provides legal advice and counsel for all matters pertaining to the company's business operations, such as the negotiation and drafting of contractual agreements and letters of intent, consulting agreements and the maintenance of the company's intellectual property position. His scope of responsibility includes securities compliance, insider trading, employee relations, and other corporate legal matters.
Mr. Woloshen has over 25 years of corporate counsel and general legal experience, including positions with Philips Medical Systems North America; Biotherapeutics, Merck, and Baxter, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Air Force. He is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts, Tennessee, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Woloshen received a Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School and holds a Bachelor's degree from Colby College.
Carol A. Ziomek, Ph.D., Vice President of Development
Carol A. Ziomek is a founding member of GTC Biotherapeutics. Dr. Ziomek manages the technical aspects of product development for recombinant antithrombin III, from gene construct to final product production, and leads the multi-disciplinary team that is developing the rhATIII viral and pathogen safety strategies. She also is a member of the technology evaluation team assessing new technologies for improved efficiency of the transgenic production process.
Dr. Ziomek has over 20 years of transgenic production experience, including several years with Genzyme Corporation as head of the transgenic embryology department and as Staff Scientist at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology.
Dr. Ziomek received a Ph.D. in Biology from Johns Hopkins University, performed her post-doctorate at the University of Cambridge, England, and holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Wilkes College, Pennsylvania.
